Today's the day Grey's Anatomy fans have been waiting for. After the wait resulting from the midseason break, the show is returning to the small screen tonight with the premiere of Season 21's midseason premiere.
On March 6, the midseason premiere episode, called "Hit the Floor," will premiere on ABC at 10:00 p.m. ET. The current 21st season of the show debuted on Sept. 26, and it went on its midseason break starting on Nov. 21 after the premiere of the eighth episode of the season, "Drop It Like It's Hot." Production also took a pause in January amid the wildfires in the Southern California region, where Grey's Anatomy is filmed.
The midseason break left fans with questions they are waiting to have answered in the new episodes. Notably, the show saw the departures of Mika Yasuda (Midori Francis) and Levi Schmitt (Jake Borelli). While it's unfortunate for fans to say goodbye to departing characters, the situation opens the door for new faces to come into Grey Sloan and help change things up. Showrunner Meg Marinis has teased how the new characters who will soon appear in the series in the rest of Season 21 will affect the story.
New Faces Will Appear in Season 21
"Not replacements [for Francis and Borelli], but Grey’s always brings in new faces to come hang out and play for a while. So, we’ll always continue to do that," she told Shondaland. "We’ll continue to have some of our recurring guest stars for the second half of the season. We’re always going to bring in faces that you know from somewhere, whether they’re patients or visiting doctors, to play villains or, you know, one-off love interests. We’ll get to see Meredith [Ellen Pompeo] for some episodes in the middle of the season. It’ll be fun to see how she’s doing. The last time we saw Meredith, she and Richard [James Pickens Jr.] were really in conflict. And so, we’ll get to see how that plays out."
She added, "I also think that even though you understand it, it’s hard to lose a member of the team, especially Mika, who had such a large presence to the team of five. And so, who is going to kind of fill in that energy? Within the intern group, there’s going to be a lot of assumptions in terms of how they should each be acting and how everyone should think about Mika’s departure. Everyone has their own way of grieving and processing when someone’s not in their life anymore."
The new episode of Grey's Anatomy premieres on Thursday, March 6, at 10:00 p.m. ET, following the airings of 9-1-1 and Doctor Odyssey. New episodes will be released weekly, and they are made available for streaming the next day on Hulu and ABC.com. "Hit the Floor" will start streaming on Friday, March 7.
