SEAL Team Season 7’s Potential Clay Appearance Gets Honest Response From Max Thieriot

Clay's potential appearance in SEAL Team season 7 gets an honest response from former cast member Max Thieriot. Led by Bones and Buffy the Vampire Slayer alum David Boreanaz, SEAL Team is set to return for its final season without Clay Spenser. The character was killed off in season 6, allowing Thieriot to focus on his work as the star and co-creator of the CBS drama Fire Country. With his death, Clay left reverberations that the series continues to grapple with.

In an interview with TV Insider, Thieriot addressed whether Clay could appear as part of a flashback in the forthcoming SEAL Team season 7. The actor shared that he would have loved to make an appearance, acknowledging that it could still happen at the last minute, but noting that it would be unlikely. Thieriot's remarks echo what showrunner Spencer Hudnut had said previously. Their quotes are below:

Thieriot: I would’ve loved to have gone and done that, but I think they’re preparing to film the rest of their season right now, and I know they’re going to Colombia. So I don’t think, as far as I’m aware of, unfortunately there’s not any plan for that, unless they call me at the last minute.

Hudnut: We’ve done things like that in the past. I just think part of this decision was that just to finish Max’s work this season was such a struggle. The idea of being able to plan ahead and figure that out just seems hard, but we’ll never say no to anything. Clay’s legacy will live on within the show. And yeah, if there’s an opportunity where we could do something like that, I’d be all for it because he’s such a huge part of the show.

How SEAL Team Moved Forward After Clay's Exit

Clay's Death Led To A New Character And Changes For Jason

Members of SEAL Team arguing including Max Thieriot and David Boreanaz

Thieriot bid farewell near the end of SEAL Team season 6, when Clay died while trying to save a fellow veteran. Though the storytelling decision freed up Thieriot to focus on Fire Countryit ended up having a significant impact on the rest of SEAL Team's characters. This was particularly evident in the season 6 finale, co-written by Hudnut and Dana Greenblatt, with Christopher Chulack directing, which saw Jason Hayes (Boreanaz) struggling to accept what happened to Clay and blaming himself.

Clay was replaced by Foxtrot transfer Omar Hamza, who is played by new cast member Raffi Barsoumian. Alongside that change, Jason finally disclosed that he has TBI. He detailed how that negatively impacted his recent missions. This did not endear Jason to his superiors, given how Jason made the admission at his Navy Cross ceremony. In the end, however, Jason's team stuck up for him and shared that they're all suffering from their own traumas. It remains to be seen what the fallout from that display of solidarity will be when season 7 debuts.

SEAL Team season 7 is expected to premiere later this year, but an exact date has not been announced.

SEAL Team season 7 will welcome new recurring actors, including Superman & Lois actor Dylan Walsh and Beau Knapp, who is known for portraying Knox in the thriller Death Wish. It will also have to bring closure to the mainstays played by Boreanaz, Neil Brown Jr., AJ Buckley, and Toni Trucks. Even if Clay doesn't show up in the form of a flashback or elsewhere, the Paramount+ drama is poised to have an eventful exit.
