Mika’s Grey’s Anatomy Season 21, Episode 7 Fate Is Worse Than Death

Warning! SPOILERS about Grey's Anatomy Season 21, Episode 7 ahead.

The shocking events of Grey's Anatomy season 21, episode 6’s ending propelled the main action in season 21, episode 7, letting both Chloe and Mika’s lives hang in the balance – however, the episode’s ending guaranteed Mika’s fate is worse than death. Chloe’s arrival in Grey’s Anatomy season 21, episode 4 upended Mika’s life as it was known, prompting her to juggle taking care of Chloe and working at Grey Sloan. Mika’s day in Grey’s Anatomy season 21, episode 6 was nevertheless good, as she kept Darren Riley alive while waiting for his lung and scrubbed in on his transplant surgery.

Mika didn’t have the other interns cover all her shifts anymore as Chloe started chemotherapy, making her successful day nonetheless tiring. The last moments of Grey’s Anatomy season 21, episode 6 showed Mika falling asleep at the wheel, effectively kickstarting the events of “If You Leave,” when Grey Sloan’s doctors had to try to keep alive both Yasuda sisters. The heart-wrenching episode had Mika and Chloe between life and death, only for Chloe’s chemotherapy treatment to impact negatively her survival chances. Mika being responsible for the car crash that killed her sister will thus have an enormous effect on Mika’s story.

Mika’s survival wasn’t guaranteed in Grey’s Anatomy season 21, episode 7, and even after it became evident Chloe couldn’t be saved, all the doctors at Grey Sloan knew it was impossible to know if and when Mika would have woken up. However, the episode already highlighted guilt would have permeated every aspect of the ordeal. Indeed, Jules felt guilty of letting Mika help with Darren when she should have rested. Given how Mika chose to help with Darren and join his transplant surgery, and was driving the car before the crash, it’s inevitable she will feel guilty about Chloe’s death.

Ever since the news of Chloe’s cancer and arrival to Seattle, Mika felt responsible for her, driving her to doctor visits, presenting her Richard, and even coming up with the idea of a surgery to preserve her fertility. Mika’s Grey’s Anatomy exit storyline involving a car crash caused by her tiredness makes her fate the worst possible, as Mika survived but Chloe, her sister and in her care, didn’t, as a direct result of Mika falling asleep at the wheel. This puts Mika in a horrible position where her choices inadvertently caused the death of one of her favorite people.

Mika’s culpability for the crash which caused the wounds that killed Chloe already ensured Mika’s exit would follow the worst Grey’s Anatomy trend, but Grey’s Anatomy season 21, episode 8’s promo gave a hint of how bad her goodbyes will be. Mika can be seen being a different person following Chloe’s death, and her not leaving immediately makes sure Grey’s Anatomy will show how terribly she reacts to the ordeal. Mika’s presence thus ensures the last audiences see of Mika is her suffering because of the guilt of killing her sister in Grey’s Anatomy, making her exit story extremely heartbreaking.
