In October 2022, fans were introduced to the world of California firefighting in the CBS drama Fire Country.
The story follows Bode Leone (Max Thieriot) as he chooses to finish out a five-year prison sentence by joining the California Conservation Camp program and fighting fires with other prison inmates. As he gets assigned to Three Rock in his hometown of Edgewater, Bode faces his past while serving alongside former friends, family and other first responders on dangerous missions.
Fans loved the hit series, and season 2 introduced a new member of Bode's family. In the April 2024 episode "Alert the Sheriff," folks met Mickey Fox (Morena Baccarin), an Edgewater County Sheriff's Sergeant whose sister is Bode's mom, Sharon (Diane Farr). As everyone worked together to find an inmate who escaped Three Rock, the episode showcased unresolved family drama that clearly had the potential to be explored further.
Well, it looks like we'll be seeing more of those family dynamics, as CBS officially picked up the Fire Country spinoff. Let's take a deep dive into what fans can expect from the upcoming series, Sheriff Country.
What is the Fire Country spinoff, Sheriff Country about?
According to an article published in Variety in May 2024, Sheriff Country will follow Mickey Fox as she investigates crimes in Edgewater. The show will also see her dealing with all kinds of family dynamics, including a former convict dad and an accident involving her rebellious daughter.
"Sheriff Country is hot," CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach said in an official statement. "Sheriff Country will join the schedule next year as our series pick up. This will give us plenty of time to cast it, to figure out how we want to produce it, give us scheduling time, marketing time. It's a huge opportunity for us and it really speaks to the kind of development we want to be doing right now."
Executive producer Max Thieriot also voiced his excitement about the prospect of Sheriff Country, telling Good Housekeeping how fans will enjoy seeing the world of Edgewater expand outside of firefighting.
"I think this has really resonated with the audience," he told us in May 2024. "The idea of this small town, this community and how all these people sort of fit in. Us opening up the world more to see more of this community and this town, we've always been very excited about."

Is there a release date for Sheriff Country?
While there's no official release date yet, Deadline did share one major detail on when fans can expect Sheriff Country to premiere.
According to the outlet in May 2024, CBS will air Sheriff Country sometime during the 2025-2026 TV season. It also was the first series from the network to be ordered for that timeframe, after the Fire Country season 2 episode "Alert the Sheriff" aired as a backdoor pilot.
What else can fans expect from Sheriff Country?
Despite CBS keeping things hush hush about Sheriff Country, the Fire Country season 3 episode (titled "Dirty Money") may have just set up a major dynamic between Mickey and the darker underbelly of Edgewater.
In the Fire Country installment (which aired in April 2025), folks watched as Mickey returned to solve a case involving her dad Wes Fox (W. Earl Brown). She discovers her outlaw parent runs an illegal marijuana operation, and someone is trying to kill her father in order to get the business. While trying to find out who would want to take her dad out, she recruits Bode to assist on the investigation.
And that's not all. Max and Morena filmed a featurette to talk about their joint Fire Country episode, and the two teased how this set up what fans can expect from Sheriff Country.
"In this episode, we have a little bit of underbelly of Edgewater we don't normally get to see," Max shared in the clip posted on Instagram on April 3.
"The world has been built with the characters you love from Fire Country, and this episode is a little taste of our new show Sheriff Country," Morena added.
Who will be in the cast of Sheriff Country?
Although folks haven't seen all of what Mickey has to offer on Sheriff Country, Max also told Good Housekeeping in May 2024 viewers will love how Morena portrays Mickey Fox in the spinoff.
"Morena is fantastic," he shared. "She's charismatic and strong. She has all the qualities you want and really like in a character. I think people will feel she instantly feels authentic to the world — like a character who is very lived in and belongs there."
Max also teased how excited he is to see Morena shine in Sheriff Country to Us Weekly in October 2024.
"I’m really excited about it. I can tell you that personally that I’m really proud of what we’ve done so far," he shared with the outlet at the time. "I’m only getting bits and pieces of where [the writers’ room] is at right now in the season 1 conversation. But I can tell you that what I’ve seen and what I know and have been a part of is very exciting."
Diane Farr is equally thrilled by Morena joining the Fire Country family, teasing that the duo's characters may interact more in Sheriff Country.
"She’s going to be a great lead of a series, and I’m really glad I got to be in there and play with her," she told TV Insider in May 2024. "If you take two strong alpha females with really big jobs and children that they’re responsible for and families that weren’t exactly above board and now they’ve grown up and they’ve really become functioning members of society, I’d love to get them to be silly, irrational and make crappy choices together."
But Morena isn't the only person starring in Sheriff Country. After W. Earl Brown was introduced as Wes Fox in Fire Country season 3, it was revealed he'll be joining the show as well. Additionally, Deadline announced the addition of Christopher Gorham and Michele Weaver as series regulars on the spinoff series.
According to the outlet, Christopher will play Mickey's ex-husband Travis. A lawyer by trade, he and Mickey are the parents of a daughter named Skye and help her as she undergoes addiction struggles. While the two have differences in how they raise their child, the former couple's romantic feelings for one another may still be brewing under the surface.
As for who Michele is expected to portray, she'll play Cassidy, a deputy who works with Mickey in the Edgewater County Sheriff's Office. Inspired to go into the profession by Mickey herself, she now must figure out the kind of first responder she wants to be.
