Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Fire Country season 2, episode 1!
Fire Country co-creators Joan Rater and Tony Phelan have explained Bode and Gabriela's relationship bombshell after a six-month time jump at the start of season 2. Following a new stint in jail, the former prisoner/firefighter returns to Three Rock, intent on making up for his mistakes once again. However, his former girlfriend, Gabriela, is now engaged to Diego, a new paramedic and firefighter who came into her life during the time skip.
Speaking with TV Insider, Rater and Phelan revealed how Bode and Gabriela's relationship will be impacted by the circumstances of Fire Country season 2. The co-creators explain how difficult Bode's return will be for her, but also explain how he wants to see her happy more than anything else. Check out what Rater and Phelan had to say below:
Rater : Bode loves her so much that he was like, “Walk away from me. Go live your life. I’m doing this out of love.” And obviously, Gabriela has mixed feelings about that. We talked in the writers’ room about this character of Gabriela. She was an Olympian. This girl is used to being the boss and winning, and the Bode thing sort of knocked her back. What does she want? Who does she trust? And we wanted her to come in strong this season. She’s a winner. She gets stuff done. Let’s see this part of Gabriela who decides, I want somebody who’s there for me. I want these things. And Diego is these things…. We love the lights it will shine on Gabriela and what she wants. It’ll test all of them.
Phelan: It’ll also test Bode because the last thing he wants to do, if she’s happy, is get in the way of that, as painful as that is for him.
Will Bode & Gabriela Get Back Together?
Fire Country season 1 ended with Bode going back to prison, taking the fall for Freddy to keep his drug associations a secret. When he took the fall for his friend, he told Gabriela to forget about him, under the impression he wouldn't be returning to Three Rock. Taking his advice, she starts a romantic relationship with Diego, also not expecting Bode to come back after six months.
While their engagement was rather quick considering it's only been half a year since season 1's ending, it appears Diego and Gabriela are genuinely in love with one another. This makes Phelan's words about Bode ring true, indicating he could allow the pair to continue their romance without getting involved. However, his return also exhibits the possibility of a love triangle, ultimately decided based on events yet to unfold.
Although it has yet to be renewed, it's possible a Fire Country season 3 can more readily explore their relationship, given the shortened episode count of season 2. Perhaps the latest batch of episodes will establish whether Gabriela will choose Diego or Bode, answering the question in a way that sets up more dramatic stakes for the future. With plenty of possibilities on the table, it remains to be seen if the duo will get back together, or if it is time for them to move on.
