FBI Recognizes Fans as “Intelligent, Forward-Thinking, Creative Community” at Anime NYC

Among the biggest reveals so far at Anime NYC is that the anime fans form an "intelligent, forward-thinking, and creative" community — or rather, that the FBI likely thinks so, according to event organizers.

Alongside anime booths, moe stalls and a debate tournament titled "Anime Debate Tournament: Are You the G.O.A.T?", the Marines and FBI will both make an appearance at Anime NYC 2023. An official statement from Nov. 8 revealed that anime fans may possess exactly what such organizations are looking for. "Stop by Booth #373 to compete in our Battle Dome, and let's talk about both what it takes to become a Marine and what it means to fight and win as one. Perhaps you have the perseverance, will to win and indomitable fighting spirit we're looking for," the Marine Corps said. Certainly, these are themes present in many beloved anime, while the ever-increasing popularity of isekai anime could suggest a craving for excitement. It's also possible that popular depictions of the Marines from anime like One Piece or the military factions within Attack on Titan may be attractive, or even advantageous, for new recruits.

Anime NYC Invites Attendees to Challenge Real-Life Marines in One Piece Battle Dome

While the Marines have been forthcoming about their recruitment efforts, the FBI has been notably silent thus far. Nonetheless, a statement from Anime NYC to Anime News Network reveals that the organization wants to be treated just as any other attendee. "The FBI has secured booth space at Anime NYC 2023," the statement reads. "And just like any of our other exhibitors and sponsors, we feel they recognize the value of Anime fans as an intelligent, forward-thinking, and creative community." Given that the FBI's intentions remain unclear, skills like power scaling, such as with CBR's "50 Strongest Anime Characters Of All Time Ranked," may be heavily sought-after. This could likewise translate to assessing dangers and an enemy's threat level.

While it was clearly hoped that the FBI and Marines would be welcomed, it became evident from fan reactions that opinions differed on the term "forward-thinking." Anime NYC disabled the comments for its Marine post, which in turn prompted some of the "creativity" the FBI was looking for, as seen in the below X (formerly Twitter) responses.
