Biography
Hondo and Vasquez were LAPD patrol officers assigned to South Los Angeles around the same time. Vasquez was selected to have her picture on the front of the LAPD website to make the department look more diverse.
Hondo and Vasquez also applied for SWAT Academy at the same time. Although Vasquez was fairly well-qualified, this predated Christina Alonso and the admission of female officers onto SWAT. The review board voted 2-1 to reject her application, with Commander Robert Hicks as one of the votes against her. Sometime after, she transferred from the LAPD to the FBI.
Season 6
Reuniting Against McCabe
After Bryce McCabe surfaced in Los Angeles, Vasquez began investigating him and his possible ties to international terrorist Gustav Varner. While she was confident that McCabe was working for Varner and that Varner was also in the city planning a new attack, none of her superiors supported her assessment. She unilaterally led her team to McCabe’s apartment, where they accidentally ambushed Deacon and Hondo with a flashbang. She then learned that McCabe had stolen 20-Squad’s armored vehicle, Black Betty, but that 20-Squad did not know McCabe’s plans for it.
Agreeing to partner with LAPD SWAT, she falsely claimed she was working to build a RICO case against a local cartel and wanted to capture McCabe to help her case. When the group tracked McCabe to his next robbery and caught one of his crew members, Vasquez interfered with Luca’s efforts to chase a fleeing McCabe. Hicks then called his contact at the FBI and confirmed that Vasquez’s story about the RICO case was a lie.
Vasquez reluctantly shared her belief about McCabe’s connection to Varner. When Hondo asked why they couldn’t have arrested McCabe and used him to find Varner, Vasquez explained that Varner would have been cautious enough to lay low until his next attack. Hicks and Vasquez successfully interrogate the captured crew member and trace the box truck McCabe had used to hide Black Betty when not in use. Vasquez and 20-Squad use this information to find the weapons trade, ambush McCabe and Varner, and destroy Black Betty.
As an apology to Hicks and Hondo, Vasquez’s after-action report to the FBI gave all the credit for Varner’s arrest to LAPD SWAT. Hicks complimented her for being a good officer and advised her not to waste that. Meanwhile, Hondo said that as much as he hated how Vasquez was barred from LAPD SWAT in the day, she was now just a SWAT officer in a different uniform. Vasquez in turn replied there was no replacing Hondo as leader of 20-squad. The two parted on good terms, with Hondo telling Vasquez she’s free to partner up with the team whenever she wants.
Season 7
The Anti-Ukrainian Bombings
Vasquez reunited with 20-Squad when she was sent to investigate an explosion a few blocks away from the FBI’s LA offices.
